Nappy Challenge for Warm Bots!

I don't think we can imagine much worse?

Cold wet and sore bottoms on top of many other problems and hardships.......

We are taking lots of Sudocrem on our trip in February along with other meds for babies and children in orphanages.

But we also need to raise funds for Pampers ( or other high quality nappies) to help keep the older children dry. Their Foster mothers already do a wonderful job of providing 24/7 love, support and care for these precious children. They value the Pampers Nappies you provide so much that they try to make them last longer by inserting the cheaper versions inside to be removed when dirty , lengthening the life of the Pampers to keep their children dry!

New Hope for the New Year of the Dragon 2012

The Year of the Dragon is one that brings Happiness and good Fortune.

It is one of the most positive and strongest of all the 12 Signs.

It is considered a favourable year for new ventures......

We move into the New Year of the Dragon with great Hope for our special children,

and the mothers fighting against the odds to keep and help their children with special needs.

Helen has been working hard visiting the mothers fostering our New Hope children,

bringing them extra support,

encouraging them in the therapy which is so hard to do, but so beneficial for the children,

providing pampers nappies so that the children can remain dry and comfortable for longer.

And with your help we can provide a small subsidy for the mothers who work above and beyond,
24/7 for these children

provide specialist chairs and equipment to help make their life just a little easier

Warm clothes to help keep inactive kids cosy in the chilly winter months

We also have 4 new families who need our help to be able to keep their children with Cerebral Palsy in their own homes and have the means to help them and have hope for the future.

In this New Year of the Dragon, we need :-

£50 a month to help provide Pampers nappies for all the children-so anyone could sponsor one month.
£10 a month for each foster mother to provide a Subsidy to help encourage foster mothers in their demanding role- anyone can sponsor just one month for one mother and help to make this possible.

Old Friend Noodles in Nanning

At last...

we can move into the 2011 Adventures in China!!!!!!!

This year's trip was once again special for many reasons.......

it was one of these events seemingly organised "from above"

and was once again so important at many different levels.

And so after a lot of amazing co-incidences, on October 5th,

I set off for China with my Old Friend (known hereafter as Lady A)

to work with the children of Guangxi!

Anyone who knows Lady A and wonders about the title, just needs to ask me privately about Pilots, I-pods, Tea Shops..and so much more :-)

After telling Lady A that all she needed were cropped trousers & T-shirts, we arrived to torrential rain and cold weather!!!!!!!!

Never have I experienced that in October???

My credibiity was gone!

After settling into our "home" at the Majestic, we were ready to seek out food.

For those who know the area, we were disappointed to find that Food Street ( the wonderful restaurant where you could order ANYTHING Chinese was gone. )

Lady A was unimpressed , having been assured that there was wonderful food available on our doorstep...

my credibility took a further dive........

We set off in the rain to see what we could find at this time.....

Nanning was very different in torrential rain!

Matthew by now in the bright pink to prevent being soaked to the skin!

However, the day was about to be saved as we came to a little Noodle shop tucked away in a quiet street.

We dripped to our table and sat down to share the specially ordered

Old Friend Noodles

The noodles have a history of a century.

It is storied that there was a father who drunk tea in Zhou’s Teahouse everyday.

Once, he missed due to a cold, the boss of Zhou’s Teahouse cooked a bowl of noodles with spicy ground garlic, lobster sauce, chili, sour bamboo shoot, ground beef and pepper for him.

The father had a sweat and got his illness released after eating the noodles.

Thus, the noodles gain the name (Old Friend Noodles).

It was very fitting after a friendship of many many years, and a journey of many, many miles to sit down in Nanning and share Old Friend Noodles together

Good humour restored, we set off into the rain again to seek out shops!!!!!!!!
It had got even wetter!!!!!

Our star buy was this wonderful Umbrella!

PS It was not raining in Walmart!!! We just wanted to try it out :-)

So we had arrived, survived the long flights, the crazy rain,

and were ready to start our work the next day!

Medicines for Orphanages

Babies in orphanages in China need our help!

Nannies do their best to care for rooms full of babies with very limited supplies and medicines. But with the best will in the world, babies are left with sore bottoms from dirty nappies which cannot be changed on demand. When Grace-Hope staff take the donated meds to orphanages, they are all delighted to have Sudocrem which really works to keep these little bots clean and free from sores and rash!

Medicines which can make a big difference to the care these babies receive are:-

pain relief for babies/olderchildren,

Sudocrem medicated nappy cream),

liquid vitamins for babies,

meds for diarrohea,

ear infections,

colds& coughs......

I will be able to fill my suitcase this trip as it is short and I am not taking the usual gifts etc for the girls

Xiao Xiao will be able to translate all the dosage instructions so they can be safely used to help the babies and children in the orphanages

We all know how heartbreaking it is to watch our children when they are ill, and how we take for granted instant medication to bring down fever, relieve pain, congestion etc......

Please help us to make this possible for the most vulnerable who do not have that comfort.

Happy Birthday at KFC, Nanning

I think Matthew would have loved us to just stay in the park and have lunch...

but the girls were having none of it!

They were going to KFC!!!!!

Cos that's what we do!

Every year!

So the crazy task began again, dividing the girls into groups each with an older leader,

making sure everyone had change for the taxi?,

then trying to find a taxi for everyone......

Once all that was done, Matthew headed off on his bike,

carrying all the stuff :-)

We managed to find a wee taxi.....

and off we went.....

Such a Special day... Nanning Friends and Teddy Bears 2010

On that hot day back in October 2010!!!!!!, we gathered at the flats close to People's Park...

to meet our old friends,

The Nanning Girls

They are of course not all from Nanning, but they are the girls who have travelled here to meet us each year since 2005 from their rural homes and now from universities and colleges even outside of Guangxi.

It is such an honour that they still come to meet us, even those who are now working!

( a wee hurl from M)

The next generation from the Huang sisters who have been part of our team for years......

Some other "kids" for the kids to play with :-)

And then Matthew's great idea to get to our "spot" in the park....

Beautiful!

But a scary thought to try and get all these girls, children babies, and things safely to the other side!
I certainly did NOT have it covered in the Risk Assessment:-)

But we made it!

Of Course!!!!!!!

And time to settle down to The Teddy Bear's Picnic!

So special, to move on a stage with girls we met when they were just children........

The highlight ( and relief) for me is always to be able to finally share with the girls,

those precious gifts from their sponsors....

There was so much excitement as we passes them out

...this year the precious Teddy Bears packed and labelled soooo carefully

Over one year later,

it is still hard for me to find the words to express the joy that these teddies brought to our girls...

Relationships which had been built slowly over the years...just seemed to come together in these moments when the girls hugged their teddies close.

Remember our little starfish...look at the joy on her face!

We have since received sooo many letters from the girls, telling us the names of their teddies, and sharing how much they have meant to them,

especially when they are finding things tough!

Letters and communications from sponsors and Buckhaven students who had learned all about rural

al China and the girls' lives before writing these letters.

It has been fantastic to have replies from so many of the girls to the students here in Scotland.

Then we had two of the artists from Ten Blazing Suns share the stage

and pass out copies of the book to each girl

What a wonderful achievement...thanks to so many wonderful artists who share their talents, and of course Pauliina who put it all together for us

Wu Ming was delighted beyond words

and feels she is now famous!!!!!
It was wonderful also to share in her new artwork she has done for us,

Fan has been one of our very special girls,

originally from Yizhou where she had a wonderful band of faithful friends to help her in every way,

now studying in Nanning.

She shared with us last year, her dreams of becoming a writer.

This year we were honoured to bring her special gifts of a beautiful pen from her sponsor

to encourage her in her writing

Ellen shared her Special Hopes and Dreams with our girls...

It was touching to see how much Ellen's words meant to the girls,

knowing the heartbreak of many of their stories.....

..and we hope and pray that these words can offer some help and support when things are difficult for them.

A wee quiet mo for Matthew to sit and read and reflect before the next craziness began.......

but we managed it........

...and off they went!

Wow...I am exhausted just reflecting on that beautiful day at the park...and we haven't even got to KFC yet?

We were all so hot and tired at this point, that we did suggest just having an easy lunch in the park together..but when we gave the girls the choice, there was no contest...

It was worth the extra hassle to get us all to KFC in Nanning for our annual KFC party...a tradition begun in 2005 and continued EVERY year since!

The Warmth of Christmas Love

Winter is hard for many of our girls!

Every alternate year, we work with our sponsors

to try to make a difference at Christmas time,

showing love,

offering practical warmth and bringing HOPE

with a reminder of how many people around the world really CARE!

This year, Community Roots in Shanghai were able to raise sponsors and funding

to supply a Gift Bag for each girl.

Guangxi Girl Sponsors/Christmas Gift Cards have raised the money necessary to have all these gifts delivered

throughout Guangxi to all of our girls before Christmas,

along with a Special Christmas card

Da Molla

One of the highlights of this year's trip was once again walking down that hill,

in the silence broken only by the cicadas and rounding on the stunning panorama that is Da Mo Village.

This time as we approached we could hear excited laughter and giggles carried on the breeze,

long before we could see anyone.....

..then there they were!!!!!!!

The beautiful Da Mo girls running from their homes to meet us halfway,

dressed in their beautiful Miao costumes, in our honour!

Excited to meet their old friends,

Uncle Xu and Claire of EagleMount Camps who is a Beloved Mama to them,

and a new friend, all the way from Scotland!

How sweet to hear them singing.....

How amazing to see their wonderful handwork in the Doll's unique Miao costumes.....

and seeing the place where the costumes come to life under the skilled fingers of the Da Mo women

before being packed up and shipped to Scotland, Finland, Spain and the USA

Warm Winter Mission for Guangxi Girls 2011

As we know Winter is here........

and for many of our Guangxi Girls, it is a difficult time!

Matthew has just been saying how COLD it is in Nanning!!!

In the villages, many homes provide little shelter and there is no such thing as Central heating!

Many of our girls write of hardship in the cold and damp of winter....

and every second year we like to organise our Warm Winter Mission

to send our love and some warmth to them at this time.

This year, Community Roots in Shanghai

have wonderfully raised funds for,

and personally packed a bag for each of our girls!!!!!

New Hope for Special Children at this Special time of Year

What would YOU do to keep your child?

What would any of us do, placed in a situation where we had a child with SERIOUS special needs

in a place where people blamed us for these problems,

family turned their backs,

we had no money,

no voice

no hope...........

We know that many families have felt that they had no choice but to abandon their child in the hope that someone somewhere could make things better for them?

Thankfully society is changing and in recent months several families in Guangxi have found great strength, support and above all HOPE through Grace-Hope, Angel House and our New Hope Programme.

Two young mothers have defied all the odds and done everything in their power to keep their babies!

Two families with 3 year olds have now come forward hearing that it was possible to get help for their

children.

Can you help our Jinchengjiang Jack??????

Jack( also known as Gregory at Helping Hands, Guilin) really enjoys a new game where he holds onto the Carers legs and gets walked along for a short distance. He never misses a joke or some fun that is going on, despite his deafness. He always has a happy greeting and smile whenever you come to the Unit. He really loves to play with the toy cars, zooming them around the floor and playing imaginary games with them. He does puzzles extremely well and can build all sorts of buildings with blocks, coming up with new designs and being very inventive.

His good buddy Colton is getting ready to leave soon for his adoption. We are preparing him too, as we expect that this will be a big transition time for Gregory, as they have been close. The good thing is that there are other boys his age in the Unit – so he won’t be the only one his age.

Gregory recently went out to get a haircut with Colton and Zac. As soon as he saw our van , he started making excited noises. As his hair was being cut, he wanted to keep looking to see what the hairdresser was doing.

The BIG news for Jack this past month, was that he was able to hear some sounds with the aid of a pocket amplifier! We had advice from an Audiologist who also donated a device for him to use. This device is better than hearing aids as it doesn’t need the constant fitting and adjusting.

We had very good friends here at the time – one of whom is also deaf and the mother of 2 deaf children. She removed her aids, tested it out, and was absolutely amazed at how well it worked. We sat him on her lap and put the headphones on. He immediately started looking around, we knew by the expression on his face that he was hearing. We handed him a phone with music playing, so he could also feel the vibrations. The connection was made! Then it only took him about 30 seconds to figure out how to change the music on the phone!

We have to use this device for short periods each day, so he gets used to the sounds he is hearing and isn’t overwhelmed by them. It will be interesting to see him begin to make other connections as he gets used to it.

He is always interested in maintenance or other different things that happen around the Unit. He’s always close by in case he can lend a hand! He loved the outing to KFC this month. Most of the children were very worried about the new experience and needed lots of reassurance – not Zheng Bingy – he was off to the bus with no extra encouragement, and no tears as there was with some of the others. His new love – Fried chicken, fries and coke!

It is so fantastic to read of the progress this amazing little man is making and the wonderful work done by Helping Hands in Guilin!!!

We just need some more helping hands to continue to pay for his treatment.......

This time of year is often so difficult...........

In a world where so many have so little,

and too many have too much

..and at a time of year which should be focused on true giving,

Here are some of the areas of need where you can donate, make a difference and receive a Card or Certificate to give as an alternative gift.....

1.Our Special Needs Children
are all growing and need new, warm clothes for the winter. Many of them have limited mobility and all live in homes where there is no adequate heating in the cold months.
Donations from £10 could keep a special child warm this winter.

2.Foster mothers
also have difficulty keeping the older children dry in the Winter months.
They LOVE to have Pampers nappies for the winter to keep them dry.
Donations from £10 can provide Pampers for a month for a child.

3.Jack from Jinchengjiang
needs help to continue his specialist care with Helping Hands. There has been such a dramatic improvement in his little life with this care.
Any donation from £10 can help towards this care.

4.Two little girls in Guangxi
born with cerebral palsy, have brave mothers, who refused to give in to pressure from family and villagers to abandon their babies. These women need our help and support to be able to attend Angel House where their babies receive therapy, they receive training and support, and above all they have HOPE for the future for their babies. It costs £150 a month for each mother to attend Angel House, and they need help with living costs, transport etc.
Any donation from £10 can help towards these costs.

5.Our Guangxi Girls
also have a difficult time over the winter months. This year friends in Shanghai are preparing warm jackets and gifts for each of our girls and Hope4China are arranging to have them all personally delivered by our staff before Christmas.
Donations of £10 will help to make this possible.

100 Good Wishes Quilt

To welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in the

northern part of China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt.

It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth with a wish

for the baby. Part of the patch of cloth goes into the quilt for the baby, and

the other part of the cloth can go into a creative memory notebook with the wish

for the child.

The quilt contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the

families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric.

The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.

Pauliina has been very busy in the background putting together this wonderful creation...it is now nearing the end..but we need you help??

Urgent shortage of good wishes!

Donations of beautiful materials flooded in. The quilt itself is coming on.

I have cut materials for the top stripe but not done it yet

in case someone wants to donate material and wish over the weekend.

The project needs at least 30 good wishes to go with each individual fabric. As
the idea is to make money for Hope4China's work I am looking for wishes with a
donation. Every £2.50 you donate will put your name in the hat and gives you an
opportunity to own the quilt.

I was listening to all the news about 7th billion person being born this week.
Every research shows the fastest and cheapest solution for poverty and
overpopulation is educating women.

That is one of the things Hope4China does.

It enables poor girls to get an education.

I am hoping that 30 of you will think that giving up a cup of coffee and
donating the money will make a difference for a child and a sustainable, fair
future for us all.

Lee is dancing in heaven!

We were so sad to learn that Lee, the star of the previous blog, has passed away, just days after we met to play with him at Angel House this year.

It is precious to see him here only two weeks ago in the arms of his foster mother

and know that he was loved!

He had such a struggle in life,

but we are thankful that he was loved

and that he can now dance in heaven!

I share a precious prayer from a friend which I think just sums up our feelings.

" Dear Father in Heaven,
Comfort those in his Family left behind,
Welcome this precious, valiant little man into your Kingdom,
and may his days with you, Lord,
be spent Dancing with Joy
in everlasting comfort and free from pain"

Angels and Angel House

Towards the end of last October's trip, we were privileged to be able to meet with more angels.......

We were invited to eat at the lovely home of a wonderful couple who care for 3 children with profound special needs. They are a retired couple who have devoted their lives to caring for these children. The meal was amazing, but nothing compared to the work they do each day to give these children the best life possible. Despite living upstairs, most days they carry the children downstairs to take them for a cycle in an old bike with a cart attached.

I would have so LOVED to take a photo of that!

The children were bright, attentive and VERY interested in their new toys

.....and the foster mother was very interested in Shawn's therapy techniques to help the children.

It was a beautiful visit in more ways than one
we left feeling that WE had been blessed!

On to meet more Angels in the aptly named Angel House in Nanning

Angel House http://www.cpangel.org.cn

is an amazing place to serve the needs of children with cerebral palsy. Their work was pioneering back in 2002 and now provides an essential service to children and families in the community, helping them to care for their children in their homes, as well as for orphans.

We are grateful to them for allowing us the time and the place to meet together with the rest of our special children and their foster mothers.

Lee was having a hard time and as the therapists tried to carry out his therapy, he cried and it was clear that something was wrong..the poor boy was inconsolable. It was one of the most special and memorable points of the whole trip for me, when Shawn, having watched and listened patiently came over asked the therapist to stop and took Lee on her lap.

She said nothing and just held him tight, singing softly.........
We watched, mesmerised as this little soul sighed and melted into her arms and embrace.
Shawn continued to sing, and Lee fell into a relaxed sleep

When he awoke a short time later, refreshed, Shawn diagnosed a problem with his left hip

and asked that therapy NOT be done on that side until further investigation.

She then continued the therapy on the other side which he accepted without a murmur.

Poor Lee still has multiple needs and problems...

but it was special to be watch Shawn help him in that moment.

Helen continued, learning from Shawn how to work with the children,

explaining to the Foster mothers how they could best help their children at home.

A Fantastic Afternoon with some Very Special Angels

However, our hearts nearly broke watching these valiant women,

helping each other to lift heavy children onto their backs

and their fronts

in order to be able to navigate the stairs and the transport needed to get them back to their homes

We watched in humble amazement,

tears rolling down our cheeks at the thought of the hardships of their lives

and yet their joy, love and commitment to these children.

Sometimes there are just no words.......

........you just have to be there.

Oh, this takes me back....

We have only just returned from our 2011 trip to China..but cannot begin to share our news til we have completed the news from 2010!

Is it truly a sign of age when the years just go too fast???????

So, back to October 2010.............

Was it really one year ago when Shawn and Helen sat in the Majestic chatting about the needs of the special children we were about to meet?

Then off to the Dairy farm in Nanning which has been home to hundreds of children adopted around the world. When Foster care began from Nanning SWI , the first foster mothers were from this area and there has been a long tradition of foster families living here caring for the Nanning children.

I was really excited to be able to go and visit!

Walking into the first home we were met with the excited smiles and giggles of our precious Linda!

She is such a bundle of delight.......

and it is always such a joy to see how she is progressing.............

This little girl's progress symbolises the vision and hope of both Grace-Hope and our New Hope Programme to change lives!

Without this vision and the faithful support from sponsors, this little girl and many more like her would be left languishing in an orphanage cot.

Our team of happy helpers sprang into action, preparing the ground outside for our therapy session with the children and their dedicated foster mothers.

Everything ready, Shawn can begin encouraging the foster mothers who have taken on this demanding and important job of caring for these precious children with profound needs.

She explains thro Helen the importance of touch in building attachment with the children

and the therapy exercises to increase and strengthen muscle control.

A very "hands on experience" for the children and foster mothers.

It is always fascinating to watch how a Team works.

Amazing to watch Shawn in action, gently watching, explaining, showing how to make a difference in these little lives.

Once the rest of our little team had helped to greet the children and set up the equipment,

they got about their own business round the corner with Ellen and their crafts

So delightful to see the happy little faces, surrounded by love in this place

Once the hard work was over, it was time to share the new clothes and toys with the children

Linda is excited with her new toys and as ever, keen to learn,
loving the interaction with new people

All too soon.after a wonderful morning

it was time to say goodbye to these precious people......

........ who do the real hard work day by day caring for the children.

The reality of carrying these now heavy children into wheelchairs,

up and down stairs

and making their way around as best they can,

is not easy!

These families are the unsung heroes, making the difference in these little lives

Armed with smiles,toys, clothes, pampers nappies, therapies, advice, encouragement and support

the families made their way home......

Time for a quick look round the Dairy Farm, greeting friends and capturing the flavour of this place where so many Nanning children have been cared for over the years by a community of wonderful families

All of us left amazed and humbled by the experience, privileged to be in that place,

to be little cogs in the wheels that make a difference,

remembering that the daily hard work goes on for these families!

It certainly helps to keep life in perspective!!!!!!

instead of languishing in an institution where there needs cannot be met!

In Da Mo... the Miao Experience...and a Teddy Bear's Picnic

It was just so amazing to be here!!!!!!!!

The corn drying on mats outside the old wooden and bamboo huts

The walls of the old houses are made of bamboo with spaces between making it desperately cold and damp in the winter wind and rain.

Now the government have sent help and provided villagers with bricks to build new houses to provide more warmth and safety.

They certainly lack the character of the old houses but more importantly offer a better quality of life for the villagers

I think words will just spoil these photos...so I will leave them to speak for themselves :-)

It was overwhelming to have the girls whose faces I had come to know so well running to meet us

but the quiet dignity and pride of the mothers

as they came to present their wonderful embroidery skills in the doll's Miao costumes.

was humbling

We are so excited to be working with others to help set up this Enterprise

for the Da Mo Women to raise their own money, taking pride in their own culture and talents.

We will share much more on this later...

but if anyone would like a unique doll now, they are £28 with ALL the profit going directly the women!

It was brilliant just to "be" there......

While Paula was busy organising the Da Mo Dolls, the Teddy Bear's Picnic was about to begin upstairs........

..the girls were so excited...and so helpful!

It was really just quite humbling and overwhelming!

However it is the one place where there is no difference between the boys and girls!
Poverty here is universal and there is nothing different depending on gender...so I thought it might be a good idea to bring some little things for the boys? They nearly took our hands off they were so excited!

It was fun to have all the girls and the teddies together before it was time to leave...and it also made it easier for us to pick out the photos of the girls to send to their sponsors.

No-one wanted to leave....and the girls did not want us to leave......

...so we all went for a walk together in the village.

It was actually a bit surreal with memories of The Sound of Music,

as the beautiful Miao girls just burst into song on the mountains!

Journey to Da Mo, Jingxi ( October 2010)

It was amazing to arrive in Jingxi town

to see it being dug up before our eyes

the old is going

the new is coming in

It looks like China want to make the most of the natural beauty of this area

and turn it into Guilin- a top tourist attraction.

We decided we wanted a cake to take to the Da Mo girls for our birthday celebrations

so Matthew had that ordered in moments, and we just waited for it to appear!

This girl walked past the van ......

......where it was quickly transferred

........and we were off on our exciting journey down the hill of death to the Miao village of Da Mo!

Paula had her daughter's dolls ready to show the Da Mo womenn to see if we could help set up a small business with them making Miao costumes?

It is impossible to capture on camera, the breath-taking (in more ways than one),

beauty of the view down the steep valley

and wonderful to stop and observe the century old traditions of the Miao people

living here close to the Vietnam Border

We passed Longban Middle School,

where in the last few years, the very first Miao girls ever from Da Mo attended school.

It has been a hard time for them to integrate and feel accepted here, but most have struggled on valiantly, with extra support from Matthew and his team

and through this gate is Vietnam!

Continuing down the hill, we closed our eyes and prayed!

There was a lot of nervous giggling from the girls...and the mums!!!!!

And eventually we all decided we would like to walk!

The poor driver had to navigate the crazy single track hairpin bends on the edge of a sheer drop!

Thankfully the only other traffic we met was scooters

Shawn, spotter of the amazing, stopped us to look at this ingenious creation

The ordinary old plastic water bottle

propped up by some twigs

to hold it JUST at the point where the fresh water dripped...

straight into the mouth of the bottle!

So some ingenious travellers would always have fresh water to drink on their journey!

Butterflies as I have mentioned before were the theme of this trip

tho it was hard to capture them as they flitted amongst us

As we came down the hill and into the silence of this remote and beautiful village,

time just stood still.

I had to stop and just breathe it all in.

I could not believe we were finally there!!!

As we gathered our breath, outside the first house in the village,

almost from nowhere came a face, loved and well-known to me over many years

She was amazed!!!!!!!

I was amazed!!!!!!!!

...even speechless!!!!!!

as Meihao and MeiLi
took us by the hand and welcomed us into their home.

Oh, it was such a privilege to be there..

and it just always amazes me just how much can be shared without language.

A very special time!

Soon it was time to head back into the village where we could not wait to meet the rest of the girls we have loved, prayed for, supported and watched thro so many of Matthew's incredible photos and DVDs.

Haggis & Noodles

The idea for Haggis & Noodles came from Matthew's trip here last year when , for some strange reason , we found ourselves trying to eat haggis with chopsticks??????

Since then, the wonderful fusion we share in our lives with things Scottish and Chinese has just continued to evolve.

When we knew Matthew was coming home in August for the Cycle Trip to Paris in aid of Guangxi Girls, the idea just continued to evolve........

Time to get this party started...with some help from our littlest one!

The real work was going on in the kitchen with hundreds of tatties and neeps all peeled ready for the meal

An amazing team in St Margaret's Church worked for 2 days to have everything ready

Glasgow Photoshoot to prepare for Paris Cycle

Early morning call.... 6am...heading to Glasgow for Photoshoot

who is organising the trip to raise funds for many charities including Hope4China.

One of the magic moments was when Mr Tunnock, creator of The Tunnocks Teacake

and owner of the famous Scottish family business, stood to shake hands .........

and pulled out a packet of Tunnock's caramel wafers from his inside pocket!!!!!!

Made my day!!!!!!

Miss Glasgow then arrived on her bike and joined us all for coffee, sharing stories with Matthew and Mr Tunnock.

Suitably refreshed, we all stepped out to meet with the Lord Provost of Glasgow for the publicity shots for the Cycle trip from Scotland to Paris

You know when you know....

You know, when you know that someone is having a hard time?

This is how it was for me, the day I met this beautiful Foster Mama and her 2 Treasures....

She smiled, said all the right things, but something in my heart told me that there was more...

so I probed, asked, asked again, got Mathew to ask, and sat and listened whilst I was told over and over again that she was ok, her needs were met and all was fine.

So why couldn't my heart settle?

Why as a mother of twins did I not accept these answers? Having 2 able bodied babes was hard enough, this amazing Mama had 2 babes with many Special Needs!!! Surely she had needs of her own???

So.... it had to be me, I was asking the wrong questions, i was assuming too much, maybe all the info was getting lost in translation...mmmm.....

it was time to back off and have a prayer and a think....

everyone looked happy, just time to sit back and enjoy...

and then all of a sudden, we were alone, me her and Huang Qing, time to ask again....

Mama, are you sure that there is nothing that can make your life with the children a bit easier?

Maybe some equipment? anything that would just take the pressure of a wee bit?

and as she relaxed, a smile came across her face, and a nod and a request....a pushchair.

A pushchair so she wouldn't have to carry both boys, one on her front, one on her back, to the shops, to the clinics, to where ever she went, a pushchair to ease her strain!!!!

And so the chase was on, I asked Mathew, who asked the Orphanage Director, who agreed to drive us to the shop, where we debated, tried, chose and un chose, the Queen of Pushchairs, which could fit, if Mama wanted, her 2 children in it.

So back we came, racing against time, (Mrs Greenshields runs a tight schedule) and showed Mama what we had found....she liked it, but the little one will have to get used to such a contraption.

But the best for me was when we all tried to fold it down and put it back up again and try as we might we couldn't work it out.

It took Ossi, an engineer, to finally sort what was fast becoming an embarrassing situation : )

He sorted it, a shout of praise rang out in the hotel lobby and we were off again....

a quick photo, before we had to leave...

I left with so many questions in my mind....why did it take so long for her to voice her needs, how does she smile when her needs are so great, why is the world so unbalanced, why is life so hard for some....

but as I sat in our bus, mulling things over I was overcome with a sense of awe, that here I was in this wonderful nation that is China, sharing in a small part of a fellow woman's daily struggle and in it all, all I could remember was her smile.

And woman are doing what they have been doing so well all over the world, for millennia, loving, caring, supporting and smiling, through life's many challenges on a very real, daily basis.

New Guangxi Girls needing help

3 of the 7 girl's stories we received this week.

I was born on Aug. of 1997, studying on Grade Four in Yizhou NO.4 Primary School.

There are three people in my family,my mother,stepfather and I. My mother was sold to another place when she was young. After I was born, my mother ran back to Yizhou. And then she married with my step father. They rent a simple house in Qingyuan town,do some labor work and reclaim recoverable garbage to live on. But when I was six years old, my mother had a traffic accident,her leg was cut and had something wrong with her mind. The whole family depends on my father but he suffers in cerebral hemorrhage, he cannot take care of himself. Now we cannot pay our house rent, some kind person paid for us. If not we will be homeless. My clothes come from neighbor sisters’ old clothes. Now my parents cannot work, my life is very difficult so I hope some one can help me.

Note: this child was recommended by Yizhou Women’s Federation they hope we can help her and her family. They said she is so late to study because of their poor life.

My name is Tan , was born on Nov.11 of 1996, studying on Grade Seven in Chengguan Middle School.

My father died after I was born eight days, and then my mother remarried. I only have my old grandparents, aunt & uncle who in a poor health. My aunt suffers in a high blood pressure, and need to take medicine. My uncle just takes some simple work at home. My grandparents are too old to work. My aunt supports the whole family. And now I am a middle school student and spend much money in my food expenses. Although I live in orphanage, it still has difficult for me, because our orphanage has an economic hardship, we have more than twenty students in middle school, it will spend fifty yuan for food expenses one week for each person. It is a lot of payment for orphanage. In next term, we will have more than forty persons study at middle school. It will make our orphanage into the trouble.

We visit her orphanage in July 16 of 2011, Tan said, her mother remarried and had a daughter, so her mother cannot give her little food expenses. Her uncle had two children, so they also in a poor life, and cannot help her.

Her teachers who is in orphanage said that, because of the orphanage has trouble in economic, so they had asked for help from Pinggou local government, but had no messages, so the orphanage cannot pay for students others fee at school except their food expenses. So they hope we can help Tan.

My name is Huang , was born on Oct. 11 of 1998 studying on Grade Seven in this Step of 2011.

I live in Tongren village, I am twelve years old. My mother died many years ago, because of our poor life, my father went out to work and save each penny for us, when he was sick, he didn’t go to see doctor. Last year, he was ill and then sent to hospital, but cannot cure him, and then he died. My grandmother is seventy years old and in poor health lives with us. But we have no income so live with my uncle’s family. We live in a poor life.

I work very hard at school. I have a dream, I hope I can earn much money in the future and I can build a building for my grandmother. So I hope you can help me.

We visited her house in July 20 of 2011. They live in a broken and old house.

Her grandfather told us: her mother died many years ago, so her brother gave up his study and went out to work for our poor life. He had a low income and cannot send money back to us. Last year her father went back home from Hainan, and then got a pneumonia, died after one month. I am too old to work, just stay at home to do homework. And her uncle helps them to do their farm work.
